Memory, literature and responsibility
A proposal for Testimony Studies drawing on Emmanuel Lévinas

The central argument of this article is that the Testimony can be understood base on what Lévinas refers to as Responsibility, that is, as the survivor's response to the unjustified suffering that millions of people imprisoned and murdered experienced in forced labour and extermination camps during the German Nazi regime. Starting from the hypothesis that testimony is to assume the ethical task of resisting the banalization of murder, this article points to the Ethics of Otherness, based on the philosophy of Emmanuel Lévinas as an important theoretical and political instrument for critique of the Testimony.
