Social and legal recognition of rights and guarantees is part of the process of civilizational advancement of contemporary societies and a way to opposing social inequalities. The main strategy adopted by the collective agents seeking their affirmation is building discourse strategies in the public sphere, which includes the identity articulation groups that have been subordinated in the historical narrative of their countries. The struggle for recognition of the native peoples is part of this process of discourse struggle, with emphasis on the protection of their culture and territory. Subjected to a excluding model of social organization from the beginning of colonization, their rights have been formally recognized in the legal universe since the mid-1970s, in particular through the approximation to environmentalist discourse and the internationalization of their agenda. However, the predominance of practices of environmental racism still hinder the material advance of this recognition.
