Abstract

Since 2010, official statistics have shown that South-South migration has been growing and diversifying in Brazil. Within these new migration flows, in order to discuss sociolinguistic complexity that characterizes contemporary scenarios of globalization, I draw on superdiversity perspective (VERTOVEC, 2007; BLOMMAERT, 2012) and I reflect on sociolinguistics processes related to this context of global migration (GAL, 2006; BLOMMAERT, 2008). The aim of this chapter is to reflect on linguistic ideologies in a multilingual context of a course of Portuguese as an additional language for recent migrants. The spotlight is on one of these classes which seven Hattian students attended. My focus question is: What language ideologies are present in the language practices in this educational context? This paper is organized in three parts, followed by some final remarks: historical context, theoretical concepts and analysis of the data that were generated ethnographically.
