Abstract

Abstract: This paper is about the book O livro de Cesário Verde (1887). Comparison is used to assist in the analysis and understanding of the portuguese poet. A comparison is made between Cesário Verde (1855-1886) and the French Impressionist painters (Edouard Manet, Gustave Courbet). Based on these comparisons it is hoped to demonstrate the specificity of the work of Cesário Verde in relation to the period in which he wrote. The paper also tries to determine his importance at the beginning of modernity in Portuguese poetry. Keywords: Modern Portuguese Literature; impressionist language; impressionist poets, modernity.
