The proposal worked here aims to understand the dynamics of appropriation of squares in the city of Ituiutaba (MG). A first field exploratory activity was carried out in order to identify the main characteristics of the city's squares. After this moment, ten squares were defined, to consider the diversity of locations (central, intermediate and peripheral), sizes, landscape composition, ability to carry out environmental, aesthetic, recreational functions as well as the characteristics of the surroundings (residential, commercial and mixed). We can infer that the analyzed squares can be interpreted from contents that refer to the following aspects: the relationship of centrality and the political and cultural manifestation, the multiple uses and multiple territorialities, the square as a place of leisure and recreation and the square of neighborhood on the outskirts, with its own characteristics.
