Over the years, home-based work has been presenting a series of changes that have permanently challenged researchers in the most diverse areas of scientific knowledge. The occupational, semantic and methodological diversity made the concept approach from a variety of perspectives, from its classical Marxian understanding to more contemporary approaches (GUILBERT e ISAMBERT-JAMATI, 1956; ABREU e SORJ, 1986; BENERÍA e ROLDÁN, 1987; BORIS e DANIELS, 1989; LALLEMENT, 1990; FESLTEAD e JEWSON, 2000). Reflecting on the nature of this activity increasingly present in our social space and, why not say, in our homes, there is, therefore, a pressing need within the scope of the Brazilian academy. This theoretical essay has as its main objective to have another overview of the concept, which, in our view, seeks to establish a dialogue between the classic and contemporary approaches of the home-based work, thus enabling a broad research agenda.
