The environmental thermal comfort has become a concern in recent years. Municipal and state school buildings have generally similar architectural patterns across the country, disregarding the climatic characteristics of the region. The climatic conditions of the city of Cuiabá - MT are strict, with average annual temperatures close to 25 ° C. The school environment influences students' performance in their teaching-learning process. So the objective of this article was to analyze the school environment and the conditions of thermal comfort and discomfort, through the application of the Effective Temperature Index as well as the students' perceptions. The application of the effective temperature index demonstrated that air-conditioned environments offer better conditions of comfort, providing students with better school performance. The application of the subjective index showed the predominance of a feeling of comfort in the air-conditioned room and the predominance of discomfort in the room without air conditioning.
