Abstract

The main objective of this research is to analyze the central area of Ituiutaba / MG as a central consumption space of the city. We sought to: characterize the central area; address the importance and meaning of the central nucleus in the context of the city; and identify the intensity of land use. The method used was based on Murphy; Vance (1954 and 1968), Ribeiro Filho (2004) and Alves (2011), and adaptations. The results showed the existence of a central area located in part of the Centro neighborhood, containing one central nucleus, two mixed zones and two peripheral zones. The five main uses of the central area identified were: residences (28.64%), clothing and shoe stores (8.56%), offices (6.07%), unoccupied places (5.89%) and bars, snack bars and the like (4.19%), indicating the low incidence of central activities in this area. We demonstrate the importance of the central core to the city and the intensity of land use. We conclude that Ituiutaba presents mono-centrality considering the absence of sub-centers.
