Jarra Beethoven e a incrível história de uma imagem-problema

Resumen

A partir de estudos filiados à cultura visual, que lidam com as questões de imagem e de lugar, pretendemos revisitar a história de uma jarra confeccionada em Portugal em fins do século XIX, doada ao governo brasileiro e hoje constante no acervo do Museu Nacional de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro — a jarra Beethoven. Por meio da análise crítica dos percursos dessa jarra e perseguindo a historicidade dos sentidos a ela atribuídos, pretendemos discutir a relação entre imagem, objeto e espaço no que tange às questões de idolatria e iconoclastia referentes a um único objeto, mostrando a transitoriedade dos sentidos e o papel das instituições e dos discursos de competência no balizamento do juízo sobre um objeto (de arte). ABSTRACT: Using studies linked to visual culture and dealing with questions of image and place, we intend to revisit the history of a jug made in Portugal at the end of the 19th century, donated to the Brazilian government, and nowadays part of the permanent collection of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro — the Beethoven jug. Through critical analysis of the journeys taken by this jug and by pursuing the historicity of the meanings given to it, we intend to discuss the relationship between image, object and space with reference to questions of the idolatry and iconoclasm of a single object, showing the transience of the meanings and the role of institutions and authoritative discourse in determining opinion on a work of art.
