Abstract

Over the last five decades, Hayden White has always been associated with important historiographical debates and disputes. The undeniable relevance and extent of his legacy elicited ambiguous reactions and controversies and gave rise to a vast literature produced by his commentators and analysts. This article aims to analyze two moments (1980 and 1998) of the reception of the book Metahistoy (1973), Hayden White’s main work, in the pages of the prestigious History and Theory. This journal, an inescapable reference in the field of theory and philosophy of history, played a decisive role in structuring a set of reflections and analyzes on the relevance of the theoretical assumptions in White’s seminal book.
