Abstract

For Vladimir Jankélévitch, events are less and less funny, as they touch deeper, core areas of existence. You cannot play with death because it kills; nonetheless, you play hide-and-seek with empirical varieties of danger. This said, I intend to analyze in this article Augusto Boal’s theatrical texts Torquemada (1971) and Murro em ponta de faca (1978). As they were written in exile, I will seek to contextualize the phenomenon of laughter in these specific conditions. At the same time, I will highlight topics such as identity, being, alterity, and anguish.

Keywords: dark humor; political theater; exile.
