Abstract

This paper analyses the role of scientific dissemination in the state of São Paulo in the early 20th century. Therefore, it aims at understanding the role Revista Politécnica played in the science debate during its first years of publication. Founded by polytechnic students, the journal was the mainstay of defense for the Polytechnic School of São Paulo throughout its first years. The journal designed an unusual publishing strategy to widen its readership and cultivate the taste for scientific matters, being also the vehicle to consolidate a set of ideas about scientific knowledge. To this end, the journal made extensive use of iconography during its first years, bringing Sao Paulo city daily life closer to scientific debates in its pages. This choice provided Revista Politécnica with an important role in the debate on public policies in the city, as well in the state of São Paulo.
