Abstract

This essay analyzes the ways popular culture was represented by the MCP (Recife Popular Culture Movement). The groups of intellectuals active in this organization saw history as a sequence of social and political domination schemes that vary only in style and intensity. This premise –based on a consensus that this domination schemes would only change radically when the dominated classes became aware of their political strength- did not soften tensions stemming from different points of view as to how popular culture should be treated by the MCP. Despite these differences and considering a relative consensus among these intellectuals as to the need of knowing scientifically the Pernambuco social reality, we will analyze how these intellectuals conceived popular culture.
