Abstract

What we call “modern art” has two modes of existence: “autonomy” and “literality.” This article examines only the literalist mode by mapping various historiographical and theoretical ways of aesthetic literality in the early twentieth century. The text begins with a presentation of ideological and aesthetic features of modernism and then analyses a few artistic examples that showcase the major expedients of literality: montage and ready-made.

Keywords: modern art; literality; art and society.
