Abstract

This article aims at establishing a number of links between Brazilian Álvaro Moreyra’s and Renato Viana’s scenic practices and the thought of the French stage director and theoretician Jacques Copeau. These stage directors, who accounted for early initiatives aimed at renovating the Brazilian theatrical scene in the 1920’ and 1930’, borrowed Copeau’s proposal to undertake a ‘radicalizacion’ in the way theater was done in Brazil. Moreover, against many Brazilian theater scholars’ historical vision, I pose as the starting point of the dissemination of this thought the circulation of Álvaro Moreyra’s and Renato Viana’s productions.
