A nação entre sambas, cordões e capoeiras nas primeiras décadas do século XX

Abstract

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar os sentidos culturais e políticos das escolhas que importantes intelectuais em atividade no início do século XX fizeram ao buscar na "cultura das ruas" do Rio de Janeiro - fortemente marcada por tradições negras - as originalidades nacionais brasileiras. Embora tenham incluído de forma positiva algumas manifestações culturais de origem negra como nacionais e, assim, tenham contestado as teorias raciais, tal inclusão ficou restrita ao domínio da cultura. Ao não tocarem em questões como o acesso à terra, a ampliação do direito do voto, a manipulação das eleições, as desigualdades sociais e as hierarquias sócio-raciais então existentes, esses intelectuais afirmaram a idéia do Brasil como um país mestiço e conciliado social e racialmente - modo de pensar o Brasil que se tornaria hegemônico a partir da década de 1930. identidade nacional; intelectuais na Primeira República; tradições negras. ABSTRACT: This article presents the cultural and political meanings of the choices made by important Brazilian intellectuals from the early 20th century. These men immersed in the "culture of the streets" - strongly marked by black traditions - to find the Brazilian national originalities. Although they have included as national, and in a positive way, some cultural manifestations which were black in its origin, challeging thus racial theories, this very inclusion was restricted to the field of culture. By not touching on issues such as acess to land, expansion of the right to vote, election fraud, social inequalities and the racial hierarchy that existed then, these intellectuals stated the idea of Brazil as a socially and racially harmonic mestizo country - idea that would become hegemonic from the 1930's on.
