Biography and temporality

The controversial and critical relations between history and biography seem to have reached a certain degree of stability around the assumption that studies of individual trajectories have acquired a relevant status within historians’ research agendas. Over the past decades, numerous debates have outlined the theoretical and epistemological contours of this biographical turn. The proliferation of these discussions— often involving sociologists and literary theorists as well—raises the question of what can still be said about biography. In this essay, I explore a dimension that has received comparatively little attention from historians: the relationship between biography and temporality. The argument unfolds in two movements. First, I revisit the problem of the contemporaneity of narratives about individuals from the past by proposing an inversion, articulated through the notion of untimely biography. The second movement offers a critical examination of the uses of the idea of historical context mobilized in many biographies, taking the concept of the event as a counterpoint. As a result of these two movements, the essay concludes by outlining some reflections on the possibilities that the issues discussed open up for the writing of lives.
