Progresso, disciplina fabril e descontração operária: retóricas do documentário brasileiro silencioso

Resumo

O artigo analisa o documentário Sociedade Anonyma Fábrica Votorantim (1922), encomendado pela Votorantim; discute a sua estrutura, que segue o princípio da "visita guiada" ao espaço da fábrica, e caracteriza o estilo das imagens e o comportamento dos operários diante da câmera, salientando a retórica que preside a relação dessas imagens com os textos projetados na tela. A análise do filme suscita uma reflexão sobre a força e os limites do controle do visível e sobre distintas iconografias da classe operária, tematizando o conflito de interpretações na relação entre imagem e realidade sócio-histórica.

ABSTRACT The text analyses the film Sociedade Anonyma Fábrica Votorantim (1922), commissioned by the industrialists; it discusses the film structure, which follows the principle of the "guided visit" to the factory space, and describes its visual style, featuring the workers' behavior when framed by the camera. Focusing on the rethorics of images in their connection with the texts shown on the screen, the film analysis calls for an argument involving the control of the visible, its power and limits, and the question of working class iconographies. Its deals with the conflict of interpretations concerning the relation between image and socio-historical reality.
