De uma revolta a outra: memória, história e ressentimento em Lima Barreto

Resumo

A Revolta da Vacina é lida, neste artigo, a partir da obra de Lima Barreto, contemporâneo ao conflito e que dele colheu impressões que aparecem em diferentes momentos de sua escrita. A intenção é acompanhar a maneira pela qual o motim aparece nos diários do escritor, que registra suas impressões no momento mesmo em que eclodem nas ruas do Rio os conflitos entre populares e as forças do governo e a repressão subseqüente ao fim da revolta. Em seguida, procura acompanhar a recriação literária desse episódio em "Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminhaâ€?, desta vez metaforizada na resistência de parte da população carioca contra a lei que torna obrigatório o uso de sapatos. O texto pretende apreender, nesse percurso da história à ficção, e da representação da história pela e na ficção, uma tentativa do escritor de, ao atualizar o passado pela escrita literária, buscar nele uma leitura a contrapelo do progresso, sob cujo nome foram excluídos, estigmatizados ou simplesmente aniquilados aqueles considerados perigosos ao projeto modernizador que esse mesmo progresso pretende engendrar. Salva assim, do esquecimento, aquilo e aqueles sobre o que a memória do vencedor, tornada coletiva, silencia.

ABSTRACT

In the present article, the "Revolta da Vacinaâ€? is seen through the works of Lima Barreto, who was witness to that conflict, having collected several personal impressions, many of which can be seen throughout his writings. The intention is to follow the way those riots were represented in the writer's diaries, in which he registered his impressions in the same moment the conflicts were happening between the people and the government forces through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the later repression of the movement. There is also the analysis of the attempt to create a literary representation of the revolt in "Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminhaâ€? where the theme was presented through the use of a metaphor: that of a resistance by the people to follow a law forcing them to wear shoes. The objective of the text is to apprehend, through the path that links history to fiction, the very means of representation that history gets in fictional works and also the way that fiction could and might have been used as a tool to describe history. It appears as an attempt by the author to bring forth the past through literary works, searching in this past for a different way to read the progress responsible for the exclusion or even annihilation of those deemed dangerous to that same progress. And, in so doing, saves from oblivion both things and beings the collective memory of the winners would silence forever.
