This article examines the question of the exotic gaze and its reproduction in Latin America’s travel imaginary. On the basis of two fiction films that approach the theme of expeditions through the Amazon rainforest, namely The Lost City of Z (James Gray, 2015) and Embrace of the Serpent (Ciro Guerra, 2014), we will first explore the distancing effect between spectator and represented landscape, and its connection to an exotic discourse. Then we will argue that the depiction of a troubled gaze may introduce, paradoxically, a sensitive assimilation of the body by the explored space.
