No Italian artist has described Rome as the novelist, poet, playwright, journalist, screenwriter, and soldier Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938). Before he even set foot on Roman soil in 1881, he knew his streets, atmospheres, works of art, people in motion, and their faces; in a way, Rome was familiar to him thanks to the reading of authors considered like his masters, Italians and especially Latins. No one celebrated it with such love, devotion, and art as he did. Rome is a topos, a dominant note in his work, the immortal design of his ideal weavings, the meaningful dream of all his visions that he traverses as the Benjaminian flâneur. This article proposes a cross-reading of some descriptions of Rome in Elegie Romane (Roman Elegies) and Il Piacere (The pleasure).
