The review discusses the work “Civil capacity and disability: between autonomy and protection”, written by Mariana Alves Lara. The book is divided into two parts, with a review and criticism of the literature, and the second dealing with the values and interests of the protection and support system for people with disabilities. The work contains a solid argument both in the basic theoretical construction, but also in the critical foundation on the close relationship between autonomy and protection that was changed by the intervention of the New York Convention in Brazilian legislation through the Statute of Persons with Disabilities. The author develops considerations about the capacities that make up the Brazilian legal system and the impact on the factual reality of the disability regime, elucidating the perspectives of protection and oppression in relation to people with disabilities and how the support systems are verified by the current legislations. Finally, the work indicates the need to seek adjustments in the Brazilian system so that there is a balance between autonomy and protection of the person with a disability.
