Aiming at a greater academic performance in the assistance, mapping and integration of migrants, as well as a deepening in the studies of migratory issues, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been implementing the Sergio Vieira de Mello Chair (SVMC) for over 17 years, in technical-scientific cooperation with university centers in the country and with the National Committee for Refugees (CONARE, in the Brazilian Portuguese acronym). In Mato Grosso do Sul state, the only university that maintains such a partnership is the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD), and this history began with a research project on migration and refuge and that currently meets the demands of hundreds of migrants in Dourados and region, encompassing several projects from different areas of expertise within the academic environment. It´s noted that the Chair is linked to the Faculty of Law and International Relations (FADIR), so that the theme is relevant to both courses, attracting academics and teachers who were involved and contributed to the expansion of the project. The article seeks to present the history of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair at UFGD, revisiting facts and events that marked the creation and expansion of the project in the region, through a bibliographic and documentary research, using the inductive method and historical approach to the issue within UFGD.
