Abstract

In this text, some verses that Epitácio Pessoa, the first Brazilian magistrate to exercise international jurisdiction, wrote as a judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice in The Hague, are selected, followed by the translation (by the authors) into Portuguese. In Epitácio's personal archives, stored at the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute (IHGB, in the portuguese acronym), there are several other poems, from different moments of his life - in Parliament, at home, when he was younger or older. We therefore decided to recover these poems from The Hague not only because they show an unexplored side of international jurisdictional activity, but also because they demonstrate the openness of the Epitatian spirit to the literary vanguard.
