Outreach activities for the prevention of actinic cheilitis and lip cancer in populations served in Northern Paraná, Brazil

Abstract

This study aimed to describe and analyze the actions developed by the extension project “Prevention activities for actinic cheilitis and lip cancer in the population of Northern Paraná”, linked to the State University of Northern Paraná, Brazil, focused on promoting awareness, early diagnosis, and referral for specialized treatment among populations served in Northern Paraná, Brazil. This is a descriptive study, characterized as an experience report, conducted between September 2024 and November 2025, involving rural workers and the general community of the Northern Paraná region of Brazil. The activities included educational lectures, clinical screenings, and the distribution of oral hygiene kits. Data analysis was performed descriptively, considering the frequency of identified lesions and the assessment of participants’ level of knowledge. The results indicated a high prevalence of potentially malignant lesions, with 21% of participants presenting suspicious clinical signs. In addition, an increase in knowledge regarding oral cancer prevention was observed.
