Abstract

The objective of this paper is to discuss, in the first place, the Eliasian theory of civilizing process and its impact on the decrease of interpersonal violence in Europe in the long run. Secondly, we will discuss the possibility of applying Elias’ insights to study the historical development of violence in Brazil.In order to answer these questions, we will use two examples: one isa macro example, studying violence quantitatively in Minas Gerais; the other follows a micro perspective, focusingon the daily relationship of the population with justice.
