Abstract

This article aims to analyze the illustration of Chico Moleque, um sonho de liberdade, by Maria Luiza Batista Bretas. It is the story of a former slave who bought his own freedom and that of his family and started a settlement in Goiás to shelter other negroes who wished to live there in freedom. Though the narrative is quite simple and matter-of-fact, the images created by Santiago Regis, because of their symbolic and mistic contents, magnify the underlying meanings of the story.
