Educação e Identidade no discurso militar do século XIX

Resumo

O artigo aborda a relação que se construiu, no século XIX, entre a atividade militar do exército profissional brasileiro e o campo escolar, apontando a hipótese de que as atividades educativas desenvolvidas por parte dos oficiais intelectualizados contribuíram para a construção de aspectos importantes da identidade da corporação e das representações presentes no imaginário de suas lideranças. Na última década do período imperial, os textos escritos por oficiais, de diferentes armas e patentes, para a Revista do Exército Brasileiro, aqui tomada como fonte para a pesquisa, expressam a preocupação e a concepção geral dessa oficialidade com relação à educação. Consideramos que esse posicionamento resulta do envolvimento de algumas gerações de oficiais em ações diversas de escolarização.

ABSTRACT: This article portrays the relationship developed in the XIX century between the military activity of the professional Brazilian Army and the academic field, highlighting the theory that the educational activities developed by some of the intellectual officials influenced the construction of important aspects of the corporation's identity and the representations present in the image of its leaders. In the last decade of the imperial age, the texts written by officials, from different bodies and ranks, for the Brazilian Army Magazine, used in this paper as a source for research, express the concern and general concepts of these officials towards education. It was considered that this behavior came from the involvement of some generations of officials in several educational actions.
