Polymeric composites reinforced with PANox and Aramid fibers

Abstract
New formulations utilizing high modulus fibers, such as aramid and ppanox, were developed with the purpose to analyze properties of the composites obtained , important for use in friction materials, as an alternative to the utilization of asbestos containing materials. The effect of the ratio of the high modulus fibers was studied , as well as the effect of the substitution of alumina for the mica with respect to specific properties of the composites. The fabrication of the tablets followed procedures and parameters used for the automotive industry. The physical parameters of interest, determined in the composites were hardness (Gogan), density, shear strength, point of cure, and the coefficient of friction. The results compared favorably with the characteristics of commercial brake pads.
