Online content moderation and the battles between good and evil

Abstract

This article aims to analyze one of the most problematic issues in contemporary digital society, which is the moderation of content produced on the Internet, especially in social media. The research is justified by the difficulties that have been faced both nationally and internationally in facing the complex issues that the theme has raised. On the one hand, harmful practices such as extreme violence, hate speech, racism, intolerance (in its most diverse facets), viral deception online, conspiracy theories and the cancellation of people promoted by Internet "courts" have promoted countless violations of various rights in the digital environment; on the other, the need for an effective protection of rights violated by those despicable practices and the protection of the interests of companies that own digital platforms have shown themselves to be increasingly important. This research concludes that there is a need for content moderation by the state, which observes international standards and parameters for the protection of human rights. In the research, the deductive method was used, using as methodology the basic, qualitative, exploratory, and bibliographical research, making use of authorized doctrine of national and international nature.
