RIOS E SAÚDE NA CIDADE DE SÃO PAULO, 1890-1940

Resumo

Em fins do século XIX e início do século XX, o processo de urbanização das cidades brasileiras foi marcado fortemente por preocupações vinculadas à saúde e tais preocupações, disseminadas especialmente entre autoridades, cientistas e letrados, mas alcançando mesmo as classes populares, acabaram provocando, ou orientando, inúmeras medidas e intervenções que atingiram, ou pretenderam atingir, diferentes dimensões da vida cotidiana e do espaço urbano. Este artigo pretende discutir de que forma essas preocupações repercutiram na forma como a cidade de São Paulo lidaria com seus rios.

ABSTRACT: At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the urbanization process in the Brazilian cities was strongly marked by concerns related to the health and such concerns, especially disseminated among authorities, scientists and scholars, but even achieving the popular classes, ended up provoking, or orientating, countless measures and interventions that reached, or intended to reach, different dimensions of the daily life as well the urban space. This article intends to discuss how those concerns echoed in the way how São Paulo city would deal with its rivers.
