ÃœBERMAN: MUDANÇAS NA (AUTO)IMAGEM MASCULINA, HOMOSSEXUALIDADE E HOMOFOBIA ANALISADAS A PARTIR DE IMAGENS PRODUZIDAS POR TOM OF FINLAND

Resumo

RESUMO: Uma profunda mudança aconteceu na imagem prototípica dos homossexuais masculinos, que evoluiu do dândi efeminado do século XIX para o homem musculoso e sem trejeitos predominante a partir da segunda metade do século XX. A primeira parte do artigo acompanha essa mudança, centrando-se na obra do artista Tom of Finland, cujos desenhos muito contribuíram para resgatar do imaginário homossexual esse tipo ideal, e demonstrando como essa mudança era necessária como reação a homofobia e a repressão. Na segunda parte, analisam-se alguns filmes e seus atores para demonstrar como esse homem gay ideal terminou por ser o ideal masculino de todos os homens, homossexuais ou não. Na terceira parte, analisa- se como essa mudança na imagem externa é a contrapartida defensiva para o mecanismo de homofobia internalizada que a repressão social cria na psique dos homossexuais, gerando a crença de que ser gay é ruim, destruindo a auto-imagem e o auto-conceito, e culminando na necessidade de punição. Como conseqüência, é comum homossexuais adotarem comportamentos (auto)destrutivos. A conclusão ressalta que é preciso estudar mais amplamente a questão da preferência homoerótica, bem como criar mecanismos sociais que permitam aos homossexuais uma vida mais integrada. ABSTRACT: The prototypical male homosexual image has gone through a deep change from the nineteenth century effeminate dandy to the muscular straight acting man who emerged in the second half of the twentieth century. The first part of the article examines that change, concentrating on the work of artist Tom of Finland. Finland's drawings made an important contribution rescuing that ideal from the homosexual imaginary. They showed how much such a change was needed as a reaction against homophobes and repression. The second part of the article analyses a few films and the actors in them to show how this ideal gay man ended up being the masculine ideal of everyman, regardless of his sexual orientation. The third part probes into/explore/ examines the importance of such change on the exterior image as a defense to mechanisms of internal homophobia that social repression creates within the psyche of homosexuals, reinforcing the belief that to be gay is negative, thus destroying self-esteem and self-image and leading to the need for punishment. Therefore, (self)destructive behaviors are common among homosexuals. The conclusion points out to that it's necessary to deepen and broaden the issue of homoerotic preference, as well as to create social mechanisms to allow a more integrated life to homosexuals.
