Basic basket index and the price dynamics of its components in the city of Varginha-MG

Abstract

The present paper aims to examine the behavior of the Basic Food Basket Index of Varginha and the prices of its component products between June 2018 and December 2021, verifying those that most influenced the indicator's behavior. The quantitative analysis was adopted, with deductive logic and positivist epistemology. The results showed that horticultural products, beans carioquinha, whole milk and beef together explain 95.5% the variation of the Index of the Basic Food Basket of Varginha in the period studied. The importance of investments in the local production of food products is highlighted in order to minimize the impacts of volatility in the value of the food basket.
