Abstract

This study aims to comprehend the extent of socio-spatial inequalities within Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul. Our analysis is grounded in demographic data pertaining to income, race, as well as access to employment, healthcare, and educational opportunities, sourced from Ipea and ITDP. The research was conducted through a theoretical examination of the concept of socio-spatial inequality, coupled with the collection and analysis of statistical and geospatial data for the year 2019, focusing on income distribution, racial disparities, employment availability, and access to healthcare and educational facilities. Our findings reveal that, like many other large Brazilian cities, Campo Grande exhibits a concentration of wealth among its white population and a clustering of employment opportunities in its central regions. However, a noteworthy observation is that the city's primary road networks tend to disperse these aspects towards the city's periphery. The neighborhoods located in the outskirts, characterized by limited employment prospects, are predominantly inhabited by black residents with lower incomes. These areas also register higher values on Campo Grande's Social Exclusion Index. Consequently, the city emerges as profoundly unequal, with these disparities both shaping and perpetuating the urban landscape. The socio-spatial inequalities illuminated by the presented indicators are demonstrated to be not only a prevailing condition but also a means and a consequence of Campo Grande's societal reproduction.
