The present article aims to analyze the surroundings of the school as an area built from characteristics of time and movement that reveal the possibilities that these areas offer to build the relationship between people and the territory. The concept of territory is used to analyze this environment, which has the school as point of reference. Public schools and services’ location was georeferenced. The research involved first-year high school students from three schools located in different cities - São Paulo, São Bernardo do Campo and Piracicaba. The area around each school was created by the API OpenRoute Service, which defined maximum displacement time of 30 minutes on foot. To get to know the students' discourse about the territory and their experiences, we analyzed the answers given to the open-ended statement: In addition to attending school, talk about your daily routine. The answers, as narratives, reveal the students' routine in terms of leisure time and the surroundings of the school. It is considered, at the end of the investigation, that the lack of articulation between the planning of public policies and the surroundings of the school can weaken the cultural, human and cognitive training of adolescents.
