Abstract

In the state of Bahia, where most of the territory is semi-arid, drought triggers impacts on various sectors of society, with major repercussions on agriculture. The aim of this work was to evaluate social and agricultural indicators that identify farmers vulnerability to drought in the Bahian semi-arid region. Therefore, four parameters were chosen, namely: agricultural management index; environmental index, FIRJAN Municipal Development Index (IFDM), and agricultural data. The present study concluded that, together with the unfavourable weather conditions, the factors related to the lack of public policies and the land structure are extremely important to understand the regional problems and drought in the Brazilian semiarid region. This fact demonstrates that the semi-arid region’s vulnerability is beyond local weather conditions.
