Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

The Bioscience Journal understands that Chatbots and other Generative Artificial Intelligence tools may be used by individuals involved in various stages of the research and publication process.

Additionally, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and transparency in AI tool use within our publication process, aligning policies with ICMJE, WAME, COPE, and CSE recommendations on transparency and responsibility.

While continuing to develop comprehensive policies addressing AI use implications for all parties in research and publication stages, we require adherence to the following fundamental principles:

1. Transparency and Declaration for Authors:

  • Authors must disclose all AI tool uses in their submissions. This includes data collection, analysis, interpretation, manuscript writing or revision, and image generation or editing.
  • Currently, we require disclosure in the Methods section or a specific section at the end:
    1. For analytical work, results presentation (generating tables, figures, etc.), data collection/treatment/analysis (summarization, writing code, etc.), authors must describe AI tool application in the "Methods" section, including prompts, name, version, and date of use.
    2. For other uses like manuscript writing or text revision, authors must use the "Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies" section, including a detailed declaration on tools used, purpose, and extent.

2. Authorship and Responsibility:

  • AI tools do not qualify for authorship and cannot be held responsible. Final responsibility for ensuring submitted content is free of errors or plagiarism always rests with the authors.

3. Transparency and Declaration for Editors and Reviewers:

  • Editors and reviewers must lead by example and be transparent. If Chatbots or AI tools assist in evaluation, report generation, or communication, use must be declared and described.
  • It is important to note that tools allowing uploaded content to be used for self-improvement must not be used.

By adopting these policies, the Bioscience Journal seeks to ensure ethical AI use, promoting scientific research transparency and credibility.
